CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Everyone piled out of the life raft, once it hit the shore of the island, their feet kicking up damp sand, in their scurry to finally be on solid ground. Mark was laden down with rolls of paper, tucked under his arm, along with his drawing materials in a small hand held case. Martella and the others carried backpacks with food, and water, a first aid kit, rope, a folding shovel, net bags, to use to carry the gold bars, if they found the gold bars.
Her Great Grandfather said the bars were small, and stamped with his own emblem, he had devised for his mining company. That would give proof that the gold belonged to her family, if she was ever stopped and questioned about the gold. However, she did not plan for anyone to even discover she had taken gold from the island until she was ready to convert it into cash. There could be laws about taking artifacts, or anything else off of islands belonging to Brazil, and she didnât want to take any chances of having some sort of delay until the authorities decided if she could keep the gold or not. Since the island was considered a myth, they wouldnât even believe that is where she had found the gold anyway. If they did find the gold.
Everyone seemed to have high hopes, as they laughed and pointed to interesting points of the island, as they headed to the path Mark and Martella had taken earlier. The fog, which had finally started to melt away, lifted into clouds, unveiling even more of the mysterious territory, which Mark, especially, was surprised they had actually found. Mark led the way, tramping down foliage as he followed the flower dotted trail they had used before. Martella was right behind him, anxious to start in earnest to look for the gold, but knowing it was not going to be easy.
Everyone was prepared for the ancient ruin, that rose up before them, like the ghost city it was, because Mark and Martella had described it to them, during lunch, when they returned to the ship. Still, to see it in person, made them stand in awe, just looking at what was before them.
âThis place gives me the creeps, âSara said, in a low voice.
âItâs just because itâs so old,â Tom told her. âYouâll get used to it. I canât wait to explore.â
âWe canât stay in touch with each other using the radios, so donât anyone get too far away,â Mark cautioned. âI am going to work on the map and the lay out of the city, and while I am doing that, you guys can explore if you want, but just stay within calling distance, and donât go into anything that looks like it might fall down on you. We donât want anyone getting hurt.â
Mark started taking out his materials, and rolling out his paper, while everyone dumped their back packs in a pile near by.
âWhy donât you explore with me?â Sean suggested to Martella.
